Elementary and Secondary Education
St. Joseph School District
Educating more than 11,000 students, the St. Joseph School District prepares its scholars for the 21st century. Whether students choose to enter the workforce or attend college after they graduate, they will develop the skills they need to achieve their goals.
The district has a broad and academically challenging curriculum with a wide array of options, such as advanced placement, honors-level and dual credit courses. Moreover, the district has a strong science, technology, engineering and math program, as well as the humanities and arts.
Students can participate in career pathways that help them prepare for the future. These career pathways include industrial and engineering technology; business, management and technology; natural resources agriculture; health services; human services; and arts and communications.
Students have the opportunity to study at the district’s Hillyard Technical Center, where they can learn trades like HVACR, welding technology and dental hygiene.
Aside from academics, approximately 300 of the district’s employees are certified in CPR. Parents can rest assured that their children are seen to inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, employees stay up to date on certification just in case an emergency arises.
Athletics teams regularly make it to the state-level competitions, exhibiting excellence and commendable sportsmanship. The district also has exceptional music, fine arts and theater programs.
Bishop LeBlond High School
Bishop LeBlond High School, founded in 1960 by the Benedictine Sisters of Atchison, Kansas, is a coeducational school of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph for students in grades nine through 12. As Northwest Missouri’s only Catholic high school, LeBlond’s mission is to provide a quality education by embracing academic excellence and promoting social and spiritual growth.
LeBlond students provided more than 3,700 hours of work and community service for the greater St. Joseph community. Students participate in two blood drives per year, support local food pantries and participate in fundraising activities for numerous charitable organizations.
With a 97 percent attendance rate, LeBlond students and their parents are engaged in the life of the school. Nearly 100 percent of students participate in one or more clubs, state sanctioned athletics and fine arts, and other activities. The Golden Eagles have a strong tradition of success in athletics and other extracurricular activities. In the past five years, the school has had multiple state Final Four finishes and three state championships (boys golf, dance, boys soccer and softball). Founded in 1858, Benedictine College has grown to be one of the top Catholic colleges in the nation and is now the largest private college in Kansas. With a highly rated nursing program, an architecture degree, a full slate of engineering degrees (chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical), a leading undergraduate theology program, modern residence halls and the Murphy Student Recreation Center, the college continues to attract high-achieving students from all across the country.
Benedictine recently celebrated a Century of Science, 100 years since the first science degrees were offered. Part of that celebration was the beginning of a remodeling and expansion project for Westerman Hall, the science building. The new 40,000-square-foot addition is now complete and professors have moved into the new labs, classrooms and offices. Remodeling is now underway in the existing four-story, 60,000-square-foot section, and plans are for that work to be finished in the spring. Outwardly, the building has been completely refaced and looks complete.
Missouri Western State University
Missouri Western State University is a student-centered learning community preparing individuals for lives of excellence with a focus on applied learning. Centered on combining classroom theory with practical experience, more than 90 percent of Missouri Western graduates participate in an internship, undergraduate research or other applied-learning experience. Enrollment is approximately 5,500.
Missouri Western, founded in 1915, offers a blend of traditional liberal arts and career-oriented degree programs with more than 100 undergraduate majors, 14 master’s degrees and seven graduate certificates. The institution is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and holds several program accreditations. Athletes compete in 16 sports in NCAA Division II.
Along with 11 academic buildings, an indoor pool, a fitness center, tennis courts and an indoor football field, the beautiful 723-acre campus features a nature-study area, hiking trails and ponds, six residence halls, a renovated stadium and new pavilion, and a spring sports complex.
Northwest Missouri State University
With an enrollment of about 6,500 students, Northwest is a coeducational, primarily residential four-year university offering a broad range of undergraduate and selected graduate programs on its Maryville campus as well as its Northwest-Kansas City location and through Northwest Online.
Northwest places a high emphasis on profession-based learning to help graduates get a jumpstart on their careers. Northwest also offers 1,200 student employment positions, allowing students to build professional skills through its internationally benchmarked student employment program.
Hillyard Technical Center
Hillyard Technical Center has been providing a quality education for students for almost 80 years. The center boasts several highly specialized career and technical programs for high school students and adults, who go on to enjoy a rewarding professional career. These programs include agricultural education, automobile service technology, carpentry, dental hygiene, HVACR, practical nursing, precision machine technology and welding technology, among others.
The faculty and staff at Hillyard Technical Center provide the education and experiences necessary for a student’s transition from the classroom to their chosen field. Each course is equipped with industry recognized curriculum and cutting-edge technology used in the 21st century workplace.
In 2017, the new two-story Advanced Science Research Center opened. Goals of this new facility are to enhance the teaching of science, technology, engineering and math; provide a laboratory experience dedicated to academic rigor; and develop a better prepared workforce for an industry that is critical to the future of local workforce.
