Things to Do in Downers Grove

Woodridge Park District

This year the Woodridge Park District is celebrating its 50th anniversary of its founding in October 1969. Because the park district was founded exactly a decade after the founding of the village, the park district is quite pleased to tie into the anniversary weekend of the Village of Woodridge, said Megan Pettit, the district’s public relations and marketing manager.

But the anniversary celebration is simply a blip on the screen. The Woodridge Park District is consistently going full speed ahead, providing recreation and entertainment to its residents, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

A new park is under development between the Ides Grove West and the new Timber’s Edge neighborhoods. The new site is expected to open in summer 2020. Residents of both neighborhoods have been actively involved in the planning process, Pettit noted.

The district is also partnering with Woodridge School District 68 to develop a 400-meter, eight lane running track and an LED-lit artificial turf soccer and lacrosse field at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School. The track will have equipment for both long and high jump events, as well as shot put and discus throwing events. The new facility will relocate on school grounds to include two of the school’s existing baseball fields, which will include paved and sheltered dug-outs, bleachers, backstops, netting and accessible walking paths to the fields.

Students will use the facilities during the school day while the public will have access evenings and weekends, Pettit said.

A new 24-foot-high sled hill is also being built on a 44-acre park site at the Town Centre property.

The 18-hole Village Greens of Woodridge golf course continues to plan for sand trap and bunker renovation and drainage upgrades, said Brandon Evans, golf manager, so the course is taking the opportunity to change the playing characteristics of many of the holes. The course recently completed clubhouse renovations. It can be rented year-round for parties, meetings and other events.

The Village Greens of Woodridge course, which was built by John Henry and opened in 1959 as Maple Crest Lakes golf course, has been owned by the village since 1973 and managed by the park district since 1995.

Downers Grove Park District

Renovations and new facilities are also high on the list at the Downers Grove Park District.  A new playground is planned for Hoopers Hollow. Currently in the design phase, it is scheduled to be installed by November.

The 1846 pioneer Blodgett House is also receiving an interior restoration. The home’s exterior was renovated in 2010 and now it is time for its interior to be restored, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Timken Foundation and a $135,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The house is anticipated to open to the public for the first time ever in early 2020, said Dawn Hartman, manager of marketing and creative development.

The district is also installing a new “sprayground” splash park at McCollum Park, 6801 S. Main St., as well as improving its tennis/pickleball courts and widening and repaving its paths in 2020.

Golfers at the nine-hole Downers Grove Golf Club, 2420 Haddow Ave. on the north side of Downers Grove, are enjoying their first full season of the new driving range, which has 10 heated and cooled bays for a longer and more comfortable golfing season at this historic hidden gem. The new shelter even features lounge chairs for before and after your “driving.”

Run by the park district since 1968, the scenic course was designated by the Audubon Society as a cooperative sanctuary in early 2018. It also offers wedge clinics, run by Cleveland Golf, in which all participants get a free custom golf club.

The District is also expanding its children’s programming in the form of the LINK before and after school program, more early childhood enrichment programs and the “Passport to Fun” summer enrichment program for ages 2-12, Hartman added.

Trips for senior citizens are also plentiful, ranging from a trip to the Halim Time and Glass Museum in Evanston, to a Milwaukee trip to the Miller Brewing Company, to yet another to the Jacob Henry House and the Old Central Church in Joliet.

Private recreational facilities

Private facilities, which offer a wide range of recreational activities, abound in the Chamber 630 area. They offer everything from fitness classes and workout equipment to dance classes, swim classes, indoor golf, conventional outdoor golf, trampolines, kick boxing, ice skating and bowling.

Health Care

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital

Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is one of the leading health care facilities in the area, offering quality care and encouraging people to make healthy happen in their every day lives.

It was recently named one of the 50 best hospitals in the nation by Healthgrades and a top 100 hospital by Truven Health Analytics, and is one of only a handful of hospitals in the nation awarded the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. In addition, the hospital was re-designated as a Magnet hospital in September, an accolade awarded to hospitals which demonstrate excellence and innovation in professional nursing practice and patient care, as well as innovation in professional nursing practice.

It is also worth noting that Good Samaritan became part of a larger system in 2018, Advocate Aurora Health, when two of the largest healthcare organizations in the country merged. Consisting of 27 hospitals healing 2.7 million patients each year across Illinois and Wisconsin, Advocate Aurora is now one of the top 10 largest, not-for-profit health systems in the U.S.

Last September, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital welcomed its newest president, Nancy M. Tinsley, who took the mantle from longtime president David Fox.

Tinsley has a wide range of experience in the health care field, beginning her career as a nurse and later assuming leadership roles that led to her two-year stint as president of Rochester General Hospital, prior to coming to Advocate Good Samaritan. She is known for her exceptional ability to lead strategic, business and clinical innovation in health system operations, as well as her focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

“Even as we continue to grow and change with the field of health care, we remain focused on keeping our local communities and the people in them healthy,” Tinsley said. “While we are part of one of the biggest health care systems in the country, we remain locally present in everything we do, especially here at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. We work to never lose sight of the communities, families and individuals we are so privileged to serve.”

It is also important to note that Good Samaritan recently expanded its already robust cardiovascular program with the grand opening of a new hybrid operating room in June. The new space allows for an even wider variety of procedures to be done at the hospital, improve outcomes and increase workflow with other units. It also continued to see success in its use of the CardioMEMs device to wirelessly monitor and treat heart failure patients.

The hospital has also continued its high level of excellence in the realm of back and spine care and neurosurgery. Each patient who goes through the door of the hospital’s recently opened, world-class Spine Care Center receives a personalized treatment plan involving advanced treatment and comprehensive support from neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, pain management specialists and advanced practice nurses.

The Bhorade Cancer Center, the hospital’s outpatient cancer facility, helps push Good Samaritan to the forefront in providing the highest-level cancer care to the western suburbs. The space offers seamless care coordination by expert physicians and medical staff in all areas of cancer care. The cancer center also includes consultation rooms where newly diagnosed patients meet with their medical team on the same day, at the same location as with on-site financial, patient and nurse navigators.

The facility also offers some of the best care for new and expecting mothers in the area. The hospital recently opened a new Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to offer expanded care for medically unstable or critically ill newborns. The new unit doubles the size of the hospital’s previous space and includes private rooms for improved privacy and comfort.

Good Samaritan Health & Wellness Center

Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center is the only fitness facility in DuPage County that is certified by the Medical Fitness Association, an international organization that recognizes fitness facilities for their professional expertise, excellence in facilities and programming and their focus on safety. It is open to public, and membership starts at 14 years of age, including single, couple and family membership options. It is a multi-purpose facility that meets all fitness needs.

The 90,000-square-foot facility on the campus of Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, has three indoor pools, sauna and steam room, an indoor track, an extensive fitness floor and weight room, four group exercise studios and a basketball court.

Recent studies have shown evidence that physical activity is very close to a magic bullet for good health. Exercise, quality diet and other lifestyle improvements are important factors to overall wellness, and the center offers many ways for its community to be active, no matter their physical needs, age or exercise of choice.

Specialty services/amenities include child care services; clinical programming for cardiac, pulmonary and diabetic management; clinical services such as nutrition counseling and weight management; spa services such as massage therapy and acupuncture; a full-service hair salon, waxing, manicures and pedicures; and personal training services including land and water-based group and private swim lessons; and Pilates Allegros Reformer exercises.

Dues may be paid annually or monthly. Rates vary, depending on the type of membership purchased. Most memberships include access to more than 70 free group exercise classes per week, use of all pools, basketball court, track and all equipment, use of a locker and free towels. Specialty services and classes require an extra fee.

Midwestern University Clinics

The residents of Downers Grove, Woodridge, and surrounding communities are fortunate to be served by a multispecialty clinic at 3450 Lacey Rd., operated by Midwestern University. The five-story clinic houses a dental institute, a speech-language institute, a family medicine clinic, a physical therapy institute and an eye institute. A wide range of health care services are provided to the community by Midwestern University clinical faculty and upper-level graduate students. Dedicated to community, University Vice President of Finance Dean Malone currently serves as chairman of the board at Chamber630.

“At the Multispecialty Clinic, members of the community benefit from the expertise of our licensed clinical faculty and have a role in the development of Midwestern students as they work to become health care professionals,” said Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., president and CEO of Midwestern University. “The clinic’s goal is to meet the health care needs of the community and provide quality service to our patients.”

Community members experience compassionate, comprehensive care at all Midwestern clinics. The eye institute provides family eye care and evaluations (from infants to seniors) and offers services including visual rehabilitation, vision therapy, sports vision training and specialty testing and diagnosis. The optical department also includes a wide selection of eyeglasses and contact lenses, and accepts many vision insurance plans.

At the physical therapy institute, clinical faculty members evaluate each patient to determine their individual needs and develop unique treatment plans designed to restore health and function. The family medicine clinic features licensed osteopathic physicians and provides a full spectrum of care including annual exams, sports physicals and treatment of acute injuries and illness.

Midwestern faculty and student dentists provide a range of services at the dental institute including general preventive care, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery and implants. In addition, the faculty and student clinicians at the speech-language institute help people of all ages learn to be better communicators.

Midwestern University is a private, not-for-profit graduate and postgraduate university specializing in degrees in the health sciences with colleges on two campuses. The Illinois campus sits on a 105-acre site in Downers Grove, and is home to over 3,000 students and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Chicago College of Pharmacy, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Dental Medicine-Illinois, the Chicago College of Optometry and the College of Graduate Studies. The Arizona campus in Glendale is home to more than 3,800 students.

Four of these AMITA hospitals are within 10 miles of downtown Downers Grove – in Hinsdale, LaGrange, Glendale Heights and Bolingbrook.

In late 2018, as part of a larger ambulatory expansion plan, AMITA Health opened a new 50,000-square-foot facility in Woodridge. The Immediate Care and Outpatient Center at 2363 63rd St. in Woodridge provides behavioral medicine, cardiology, general surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pain management and weight management. Imaging, rehabilitation and laboratory services are also offered at the center. Additional centers will be opening throughout Chicago including a large comprehensive center in west suburban Riverside later this year.
