Fire Department

The department maintains a full-time professional, sworn staff of 40 firefighters and paramedics who specialize in the latest fire science and rescue techniques. Staff also includes one civilian Fire Prevention Bureau coordinator and two additional support employees. All firefighter/paramedics are certified in both firefighting and emergency medical services.

Two fire stations are fully staffed 24 hours a day. Fire Station #4 is located at 6250 Lincoln and Fire Station #5 is located at 8954 Shermer Rd. Both stations maintain fire suppression equipment as well as an advanced life support ambulance. Average response time within the village for emergency service requests is less than four minutes.

The department’s Fire Prevention Bureau also provides various public education programs and resources. Basic student safety education is coordinated through the school districts while residential home fire safety inspections and senior citizen safety programs are offered on an as-needed basis. Commercial and business properties are also subject to fire safety inspections at least once a year.

Public Works Department

The department maintains a staff of 36 full-time employees who serve as the backbone of all village maintenance services. Three divisions make up the department:

The Street Division is responsible for preserving the right-of-ways throughout the village and maintaining and repairing village thoroughfares and state and county streets within the village, monitoring the village’s 50/50 tree planting program, 50/50 sidewalk replacement program, conducting snow plowing, street sweeping, and leaf collection.

The Water/Sewer Division ensures the quality of the village’s water supply; making sure the quantity of water is there to suppress fires in an emergency situation; monitoring the village’s water supply and distribution at its two pumping stations and two elevated water tanks; and testing the water in order to follow the environmental protection agency’s guidelines so potable water is at its highest standards. This division is also responsible for maintaining the sanitary, storm and combination sewers and their appurtenances in the village; maintaining and repairing all village catch basins along with storm, sanitary or combination manholes; and repairing all blockages and damage to any portion of the sewer system.

The Engineering Division designs, inspects and administers construction projects within the village, including the street resurfacing and patching programs, micro-surfacing and street lighting programs, sewer video inspection and sewer lining programs and the street striping program. This group also maintains the village’s computer based geographic information system.


Park District

The Morton Grove Park District has been providing memorable experiences in parks and recreation since its inception in 1951. Located 10 miles northwest of Chicago, the district serves an active and engaging community of 23,000. As a separate municipal governing agency, the district is responsible for providing parks, facilities and recreational programs for the Morton Grove community.

The organization is led by five elected park commissioners, 24 full-time staff and nearly 200 seasonal and part-time employees. The district owns and maintains 10 facilities, including two outdoor pools, a museum, four field houses, a 50,000-square-foot community center and 14 parks totaling over 70 acres. The district is a member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts. The district also contracts with the Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation to provide for recreational services to individuals with special needs.

Spring

Eggstravaganza
A free egg hunt at Prairie View Park for ages 3-10. Bring your camera for a special guest appearance from the Easter Bunny. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bunny Brunch – Celebrate Easter and immediately after the brunch, enjoy the egg hunt with family and friends. Join us for brunch, crafts and picture with the bunny.

Summer

Sizzle Into Summer
Kick off the summer season at this annual family fun event on the third Saturday in June with an evening of entertainment, inflatable fun  and live music. Food and drink are available for purchase.

Free Summer Concert Series
Enjoy free concerts in Harrer Park on Tuesdays beginning in June for six summer concerts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move to the Park View School Gymnasium. Food and drink are available for purchase.

Fall

Annual Race to the Taste 5K Run & Walk
Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the annual fall race on the first Saturday in October. All participants will receive a race T-shirt and post-race refreshments.

Halloween Family Fest
Join us for an afternoon of family fun in October. Children enjoy crafts, carnival games, inflatable fun, pumpkins to decorate, costume contests, hayrides and more.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. This event will take place rain or shine.

Winter

Holly Days
This tree-lighting and holiday festival in early December brings the community together for an annual holiday tradition. Families enjoy free activities and crafts, dog sled demo, ice sculptor demo, holiday tractor rides, entertainment, live reindeer and a visit from Santa. Visit the Winter Morton Grove Farmers Market in the Civic Center and tour of the historic Haupt-Yehl House Museum decorated for the holiday. Food and drink are available for purchase.

This event is presented by the Morton Grove Park District, the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce, the Morton Grove Days Commission, the Morton Grove Library, the Village of Morton Grove and Morton Grove Historical Society.

Tree sales at Harrer Park from Nov. 24 to Dec. 22. Buy a tree and support the event.

Cold Brews
A craft and premium beer tasting event held the third Saturday in February. Attendees can try new and local beers. Features live musical entertainment.

Morton Grove Public Library

For 80 years the Morton Grove Public Library has served the informational, educational, professional and recreational needs of Morton Grove’s diverse community.

The library’s print and electronic collections provide access to thousands of items for all ages. They include the latest bestsellers and old classics, books in world languages and on various subjects, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, magazines and newspapers.

The library’s online resources provide access to live tutor homework help, test preparation and software tutorials, Consumer Reports online, downloadable and streaming media and many other resources.

Each month the library sponsors many informational and entertaining programs, from dramatic and musical performances to lectures on topical subjects to librarian-led book discussions and computer workshops. Story times, arts and crafts, and STEAM programs are very popular among kids, teens, and their parents.

The library provides study rooms, and a variety of additional services, including internet access stations, Wi-Fi, use of Microsoft Office products, scanning and photocopying machines. The library’s new Digital Media Lab offers the space, equipment, and software for getting creative with video, music and design. Librarians regularly hold workshops on converting VHS or audio tapes and LPs to digital files or CDs.

The library’s website,www.mgpl.org, has a wealth of information about library resources, new materials and services, access to eBooks, eAudiobooks and streaming video and events at the library. This year, be sure to keep an eye out for details on special programs and celebrations for the library’s 80th anniversary.

Niles Township Government Services

Among other services, the Niles Township Government processes passport applications from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with evening hours only by appointment the second and fourth Mondays each month.

To keep up with a continuously changing economy, the township now serve the working poor, many single parents and senior citizens facing the “heat or eat decision.” Other people assisted by the township have experienced job elimination, extended unemployment or illness and unforeseen setbacks that can alter one’s life.

Maine Township Government

Founded in 1850, Maine Township is the oldest unit of government in the area. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for residents by providing services, general assistance, information and programs in a fiscally responsible manner.

Whether it is a request for voter registration, companionship for a senior, counseling for a troubled teen or a matter involving property taxes, the township can assist you.

The township’s board of trustees and other elected officials represent all parts of our township, including Des Plaines, Glenview, Morton Grove, Niles, Park Ridge, Rosemont and a large unincorporated area.

Forest Preserves of Cook County

Cook County’s forest preserves are home to nearly 70,000 acres of wild and wonderful woodlands, wetlands and prairies. About 20 percent of Morton Grove’s land is composed of forest preserve. These public areas offer residents a chance to get out and enjoy nature from biking, hiking, exploring the any varieties of native plants, bird watching and more.
