The Senior Community

Thurston County is a great place for retirees to call home

Thurston County is an affordable community with an abundance of recreational, leisure and volunteer options, as well as assistive supports for senior citizens. It’s a place that respects, values and involves older people in all aspect of community life.

Opportunities are everywhere for active people who enjoy the outdoors, sports, volunteering and sharing life with family. A full array of services and supports are available from public and nonprofit agencies that assist with care needs. Olympia, the capital city, is a regional medical hub with strong specialty and alternative care options.

Information and assistance specialists from the Area Agency on Aging (lmtaaa.org) maintain an up-to-date database of services and programs. They help provide referrals to programs, in-person assistance with applications and advocacy in securing needed services. The Family Caregiver Support Program provides valuable assistance and services to families providing help to a
loved one.

The Olympia Farmers Market is within walking distance of the Olympia Center, home to Senior Services for South Sound (southsoundseniors.org) that provides activities, support services and volunteer activities for seniors in the area. Senior centers are active in Yelm, Rainier, Tenino, Tumwater and Lacey as well. A wide range of quality housing and care facilities, including homes, apartments, assisted living, adult family homes, nursing homes and continuing care retirement communities, are available to meet the individual needs of all senior citizens.

The Senior Action Network (https://sanolympia.org) brings businesses specializing in providing goods and services to the elderly together monthly to work to better understand and meet the needs of older consumers. The region hosts the annual Washington State Senior Games (pugetsoundgames.com) that attracts 2,000 age 50+ athletes for exciting competition in swimming, track and field, cycling, bowling, ballroom dancing, archery and many more events.
