Arts & Entertainment in Alamogordo

The Flickinger Center is a 590-seat auditorium for the performing arts. It is host to the Miss Alamogordo/Miss Otero County & Miss Outstanding Teen, Sertoma Scholarship Pageant in July. During the Premier Series Season, the Flickinger presents 8-9 shows. Shows include nationally and internationally known musical groups such as Jesse Cook, Arlo Guthrie, dance groups such as Rhythm of the Dance – National Dance Company of Ireland and the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble and up and coming groups such as Dala, a folk duo from Canada and Richter Uzur Duo, an amazing guitarist and cellist that combine classical & pop music in original arrangements.

The Flickinger also pays the artists additional fees to perform special shows for the local school children, including public, private and home schooled. The theater brings in approximately 6000+ school children each season to attend live performance events. The summer would not be complete without the arrival of the Tailgate Summer Series. Two Saturday nights (usually the 2nd & 4th Saturday) in June, July, and August, the night air is filled with great music from groups brought in by the Flickinger to perform in the upper parking lot of the New Mexico Museum of Space History. The Flickinger is also available to all schools for their programs free of charge and several of them, including the HS band, choirs and theater groups, take advantage of that opportunity. The season also includes productions by local groups such as the Academy of Ballet which presents two shows, one at Christmas time and one in the spring, and Alamogordo Music Theater (AMT), which presents three shows each season such as, Wizard of Oz, King & I, Annie and others. Several other organizations such as, the hospital auxiliary, COPE, Opportunity Center and others rent the theater to put on fund raising events.

Recently the Flickinger has added film to its diverse offerings. It is now a partner in the Desert Light Film Festival for middle and high school students, it shows free movies for kids during the summer and has just started a “Classic Films” program that will include such titles as “Gypsy”, “Treasure of the Sierra Madres” and many others. The Flickinger Center is available for rent by companies, individuals and organizations for meetings, seminars, parties and other events that require a large space for large groups.
