In Good SPirits: Sip Through the Shenandoah Valley
The air is pristine and the water is pure along the Shenandoah Spirits Trail where a concentration of unique farm-based vineyards, cideries, craft breweries and distilleries create a tantalizing array of wines, beers, ciders and spirits.
The approximately 90-mile trail that stretches from Harrisonburg-Rockingham County to Winchester-Frederick County abounds with spectacular scenery, breath-taking mountain views, quaint downtowns, historic structures, farm-to-table dining and a wide range of outdoor adventures.
As people have traveled and tasted beverages along the scenic trail, they have discovered that many of the venues that dot the trail are ideal settings for weddings and other celebrations.
Those gatherings are boosting the local economy. Agritourism generates about $363 million a year for the Shenandoah Valley, which is the third most for any region in Virginia, according to a study by Virginia Tech. The study found that more than 735,000 local visitors and 533,000 non-local visitors made their way to agritourism sites in 2015, spending a total of $255.8 million.
“The Spirits Trail highlights all the opportunities for locally grown and manufactured products. It puts them in front of a larger audience,” said Casey Armstrong, assistant county administrator for Rockingham County.
