Innovation and Research

A Regional Drive for the Best & Brightest

There are multiple efforts to bring business and researchers together to spur technological advances and to encourage the continued development of the city’s innovation economy.

The National Laboratories

Livermore is home to Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National Laboratories, which employ thousands of leading scientists and engineers solving the nation’s most pressing challenges. The Livermore Valley Open Campus, a joint venture between Lawrence Livermore and Sandia, serves as a new “front door” to the labs to facilitate face-to-face collaborations with academic and industry partners. The open campus works with commercial entities from large companies to start-ups in the areas of high performance computing, cyber security, combustion research, advanced manufacturing and more.

i-GATE Innovation Hub
I-GATE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a thriving startup community in the Tri-Valley. I-GATE operates The Switch, a startup incubator and cowork space located in downtown Livermore, as well as speaker series and network building activities to promote collaboration. i-GATE also partners strongly with Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National Labs to connect their cutting edge innovations with high-impact entrepreneurs. I-GATE alumni companies have collectively raised over $50 million in angel and venture capital and have created hundreds of jobs across the region.
