Shopping and Dining

Along Main Street Natchitoches

When it comes to great shopping and delicious dining, Natchitoches has it covered. Visitors will find a great selection of retail and dining spread among the downtown commercial district, a 33-block National Historic Landmark District (one of only three such districts in the state).

Downtown Natchitoches is truly a shopper’s paradise. Take a trolley or horse and buggy tour or hit the brick-lined walkways for some window-shopping. Restored century-old buildings house a medley of retailers offering an assortment of merchandise. Perusing patrons take pleasure in shops furnished with books, artwork, clothing, souvenirs, furniture, antiques, home décor and gift items. Just as impressive is the friendly customer service experienced around every corner and in every shop.

Dining is a real treat in Natchitoches as well. Downtown offers locally owned and operated restaurants serving up all kinds of cuisine, including such notable dishes as famous Natchitoches meat pies, southern favorites and authentic Louisiana Creole and Cajun dishes. Also featured are eateries presenting menus full of breakfast favorites, steaks, seafood, pasta and much, much more. For a quick bite, take a seat at a local café and enjoy a small sandwich and a cup of coffee. If more familiar chain names are your preference, Natchitoches offers that, too.

Cane River Green Market

Residents and guests planning to cook their own dinner can enjoy perusing the booths at the Cane River Green Market along Natchitoches’ downtown riverfront. The Green Market is the community’s local farmers’ market, and features fresh fruits and vegetables, plants, herbs, breads, jams, eggs as well as vendors specializing in handmade crafts, jewelry and artwork. Visitors can also enjoy live entertainment, children’s activities, demonstrations, educational speakers and more. The summer market is open every Saturday, from 8 a.m.-noon, April through July; it reopens in October and November, same day and time, for the fall market.
