West Texas MX park is a red dirt track with many challenging sections for both big and small bikes. With the red dirt and sand mix and loamy sections, a lot of local riders pick the Dunlop MX32 for a tire choice. A built-in sprinkler system ensures just the right amount of water on the ground. Practice is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Gates open at 8 a.m. and admission is $20 per rider.

Midland “Mad Dog” Rugby Football Club

No experience is necessary. Players with basic gear and a good attitude are welcome to attend a practice from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mad Dog Rugby formed its first scrum in 1976. A member of the Texas Rugby Union, the Western Rugby Union (regional) and USA Rugby, the Mad Dog season runs November through April, and tournaments are held in the summer.

Sports Tourism Brings Big Business to Midland

Each year, thousands of visitors flock to Midland to participate in sporting events of all kinds including softball, tennis, golf, rodeos and swim meets. Organizers choose to hold their sporting events in Midland to take advantage of our first-class sports venues and facilities, and our exceptional West Texas hospitality.

When teams come to Midland, they sleep in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, fill up the tank at our gas stations and shop in our retail outlets, generating a significant positive impact on the local economy.

One of Midland’s premiere planning resources managed by VisitMidland is the VisitMidland Sports and Entertainment Granting Authority. The granting authority is funded entirely from hotel/motel tax revenue received by the city. As such, the program is completely self-sustaining, with no tax revenue coming from the local citizen base. In the last fiscal year, 17 events received grants, generating a total Estimated Economic Impact of $6,137,765. This yielded a $34.63 return on investment.*
