Cabarrus County is a great place for seniors to relax, explore and stay active. Retirees are discovering how much the area has to offer the 55+ crowd. From activities year-round that keep seniors on the move to retirement communities and assisted living options designed to meet individual needs, this North Carolina community has a variety of appealing options.
The county operates two senior centers, one in Concord and the other in Mt. Pleasant, where a wide variety of classes and activities are available.
“We have a fitness room, a game room, we have all kinds of classes,” said Londa Strong, director of the Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks Department. “We have a lot of dance and fitness classes, bocce courts, shuffleboard courts, lots of fun stuff. We provide productive, educational and fun activities daily at our senior centers and in cooperation with the parks.”
For individuals looking to stay active, find volunteer opportunities or learn about medical and senior services offered locally, the county provides Journeys, a lifestyle magazine published three times a year, and Outlook, published monthly. There’s also Session Guide, published every six weeks, packed with information about exercise, health and education classes.
Those looking to live in style have several options, such as The Gardens of Taylor Glen in Concord, a retirement community that focuses on providing seniors with fun-filled, active lifestyles.
“We are a continuing care facility,” said Sharon Stoudemayer, Taylor Glen’s director of marketing and admissions. “We have assisted living and skilled nursing care. Our independent residents are an active bunch.”
Staying healthy, active, and independent is a huge focus at Taylor Glen, with amenities such as a full-service bank, pool/fitness center, library, beauty/barber shop, classes and activities.
For residents who require assistance with daily tasks, nursing care, or those with memory-related disorders such as dementia and/or Alzheimer’s, Taylor Glen has special care apartments.
