A dedication to lifelong learning is experienced on the Peninsula, which hosts several public school districts and private institutions. These schools have a commitment to providing a sound environment favorable to student success and a goal of preparing students for life after graduation.

Hampton City Schools

Based in the city of Hampton, HCS is composed of 18 elementary, five middle, four high schools and three combined schools, which includes one early childhood center, two magnet schools, four fundamental schools and two alternative schools at the middle school and high school levels. More than 19,000 students are enrolled at HCS, with 1,503 teachers providing exceptional leadership in the classroom. Among the many choices of study, the Academies of Hampton are transforming the traditional high school experience into an innovative model that prepare all students for careers, linking academic courses to college majors and career sectors. Students and teachers use experiential learning to make lessons come alive. Different pathways designed and supported by community partners are created to introduce students to a variety of college and career options.

Newport News Public Schools

The Newport News Public Schools division educates approximately 29,400 children in 5 early childhood centers, 24 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 5 high schools, 1 middle/high combination school, and 9 program sites.

With an early learning curriculum designed to boost literacy and math instruction, state-of-the art science labs and advanced educational technology, NNPS has the tools to ensure student and teacher success.

NNPS continues to work hard to improve our students’ proficiency in literacy and math by supporting teachers in their instruction, developing a coherent curriculum and using data to foster continuous improvement.

New Horizons Regional Education Center

Operates today as Virginia’s oldest and largest multi-campus regional education center, premises including, NHREC currently serves 1,505 high school students in all programs, 24 preschool day care students and approximately 1,200 adults. A dedicated staff of over 300 employees, and active partnerships with Thomas Nelson Community College, Peninsula Council For Work Force Development, Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and business community, along with the ability to adapt to the changing nature of the workplace enables New Horizons Regional Education Center to meet the challenges of the past and chart a course for success in the future.

Poquoson City Public Schools

All four Poquoson City Public Schools facilities have earned full accreditation from the Virginia Department of Education and Advanc-Ed, a regional accrediting agency. Nearly 2,200 K-12 students take advantage of excellent academic programming, along with ample opportunities to participate in a range of extracurricular and athletic activities.

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools

Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools serve the students of the City of Williamsburg and the county of James City in 16 schools: 9 elementary, 4 middle and 3 high schools.

The division’s 11,303 students are supported by over 900 instructional staff members and over 700 support staff members. ›

Each school year, WJCC classrooms are alive with interactive instruction that addresses the needs of individual students while meeting the requirements of the Virginia Standards of Learning.

York County School Division (YCSD)

Approximately 12,450 students harness the outstanding education provided through YCSD’s 19 schools. The system is an integral part of the community, offering volunteer programs at each school – the York Foundation for Public Education, adult education and the Life Long Learning Center. YCSD’s business partners supply schools with resources and assistance, while prompting various school-related activities and initiatives.

Downtown Hampton Child Development Center

As a private nonprofit with fully licensed facilities, DHCDC serves children from 6 weeks old to age 5 from tidewater Virginia families of all backgrounds and income levels. Serving Hampton, Newport News, York County, Poquoson and other parts of Hampton Roads, as well as military families from Langley AFB, Ft. Eustis and beyond

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School

Led by the Nashville Dominican Sisters since 1954 and awarded the 2018 VDOE Purple Star Designation for exemplary service to military families, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School unites with family and community to provide a Christ-centered, authentically Catholic, and educationally stimulating environment, where Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade students recognize their God-given gifts and achieve their highest potential.

Peninsula Catholic High School

Since 1903, Peninsula Catholic has provided a faith-based, college preparatory education for students in grades 8-12. Peninsula Catholic High School is a regional leader for innovations in technology and digital education.

Saint Mary Star of the Sea

Saint Mary Star of the Sea School provides a Christ-centered Catholic education to PK3 through 8th grade students of all faiths under the leadership of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia. The spiritual, intellectual and social development of all students is provided in a safe and disciplined environment. With a solid foundation in academic and moral excellence, the students are prepared for success in high school and beyond.
