Downtown Antioch features a dynamic “Main Street” with a collection of local stores, restaurants and historically significant structures. A number of historic buildings have been preserved downtown, including the Hard House, Masonic Lodge, Beede Lumber Company building, the Lynn House Gallery and the El Campanil Theatre.
The El Campanil Theatre, built in 1928, is a widely popular community performing arts venue that hosts a calendar year full of events, including live theatre from the local Vagabond Players, El Campanil Children’s Theatre and other traveling troupes, as well as a variety of dance productions, concerts, films, comedy shows and more.
Also in the downtown area are the Nick Rodriguez Theatre – home to the Stage Right Conservatory Theatre for children – and the Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch’s Lynn House Gallery. The gallery, located in an historic waterfront home, features art exhibits with an emphasis on local artisans.
Just outside of Downtown Antioch is the Antioch Historical Society Museum. Housed in the former Riverview High School (the first high school constructed in the county), the museum is highlighted by an extensive collection of local historic artifacts and the distinct Sports Legends Hall of Fame museum, which preserves the athletic achievements of community members. The site is a piece of history in and of itself, and it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Antioch is also home to the Mangini Agricultural Museum, located on the county fairgrounds. Among the attractions found in the museum are historic farming equipment, antique wagons and carriages, a restored fire engine, a blacksmith shop and a country kitchen. Visitors are also invited to participate in various educational programs centered on agriculture, food, nutrition and the environment.
Enjoying Antioch’s culture continues through the many local events that bring community members and guests together for fun and entertainment. Antioch is the home of the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds – a site that hosts a long list of year-round events, including the annual County Fair, Spring Celebration and Harvest Festival.
