FRESNO GRIZZLIES – President Derek Franks
The Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are in their 22nd year of operation and their 18th at Chukchansi Park in up-and-coming Downtown Fresno. When professional baseball returned to the Central Valley in 1998 for the first time in a decade, the Grizzlies were affiliated with the San Francisco Giants for the first 17 years of their existence, and saw the nucleus of three World Series Champions play significant time in Fresno.
In 2015, upon a new affiliation with the Houston Astros, the Grizzlies captured their first championships in franchise history, taking both the Pacific Coast League and overall Triple-A titles in their first season with Houston. When the Astros won the 2017 World Series in seven games over the Los Angeles Dodgers, four of the eight MLB champions between 2010 and 2017 enjoyed Fresno as their Triple-A affiliate; truly making many of baseball’s brightest stars “Farm Grown” as one of our tag-lines goes, a nod to the fertile farmland and agricultural juggernaut that is Fresno County, despite Chukchansi Park’s urban location.
Now with the Nationals, another perennial playoff contender on a string of seven consecutive winning seasons dating to 2012, which includes four National League East titles, it remains a virtual guarantee that Fresno Grizzlies fans and visitors to Chukchansi Park will see significant talent on the cusp of the Major Leagues take the field each night they patronize the ballpark. However, like the vast majority of Minor League Baseball operations, the true product each night at Chukchansi Park is family-friendly entertainment. As much fun as it is to track young prospects on a path to big league stardom, you hardly have to be a baseball “die-hard,” as the saying goes, to enjoy a night out at a Fresno Grizzlies game.
From our on-field entertainment between each inning break (just imagine a mascot streaking in his underwear – not that you’ll be able to forget that image now!) to our promotional theme nights, renowned by both the national media and our peers in the industry, our goal is for you to leave the stadium saying to yourself, “what will they think of next?” For example, every Tuesday home game, the team transforms from the Grizzlies to the “Fresno Tacos” with the uniforms to match for “Taco Tuesday.”
Well over 400,000 fans a year visit Chukchansi Park for Grizzlies baseball, over our 70-game home schedule. We can’t wait to include you in that number; please come and see us soon! Whether you walk away from the ballpark able to say, “I saw him when…” referring to a future MLB star; dance on the dugout with Parker T. Bear, the wildest mascot in minor league baseball; or simply enjoyed the best tacos of your life, I think you’ll find there’s truly something for everyone.
While players come and go over the years, “#Growlifornia” as we like to call our slice of baseball heaven in the Central Valley, always remains a constant. We hope you enjoy your visit to Fresno!
