Public Schools in Corvallis and Higher Education

Along with our public schools, we have some great private schools in our area; among them are Ashbrook Independent School, Corvallis Montessori School, and the Corvallis Waldorf School. The private school K-12 enrollment for Benton County citizens was 9,064 students and the home school enrollment was over 200 children.

The Corvallis School District (509J) serves approximately 6,600 students in six elementary schools, two K-8 schools, two middle schools and two high schools that offer a rich diversity of learning opportunities, such as Spanish dual immersion; orchestras, bands, and choirs; advanced placement classes; automotive shop; a pre- engineering program; and world languages.

Staff share a strong commitment to the success of all students and a sense of pride in a record of educational excellence. Approximately 71 percent of students take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), 20 percent above the national average, with a composite score of 1717 compared to the national average of 1511. Over two-thirds of our teachers have masters degrees or higher, and several have won state and national honors for their work.

Partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and service groups and a host of parent volunteers expand learning opportunities and help meet the needs of all students in the district.

Oregon State University

Oregon State University is an institution on the move, a place where faculty and students are working together to address the world’s greatest challenges through research and creative innovation. Known throughout the state, the nation and the world for the excellence of its programs and the quality of its people, OSU adds to the cultural, economic and intellectual energy of the Corvallis community. Its 420-acre campus—located in the heart of Corvallis—was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Total enrollment for 2008-09 is 20,320. Students attend OSU from every state and more than 80 countries. They choose from 200+ academic programs in 11 colleges, as well as online programs through Ecampus and more than 20 degree programs at OSU-Cascades Campus in Bend.

As Oregon’s premier research university, and with more than $231 million in annual research funding, the depth and breadth of OSU’s impact spans 26 countries and dozens of world-class institutions. OSU research produces insights and discoveries in areas as diverse as food science, natural resources, engineering, oceanography and environmental stewardship. OSU is one of only two U.S. universities to hold all four of the land-, sea-, space- and sun-grant designations.

OSU’s economic footprint in Oregon exceeds $1.5 billion, including $562 million in Benton and Linn counties alone. That means multiple opportunities for partnerships and collaboration with the local business community.

OSU also brings a wealth of creativity, culture and diversity to Corvallis. Each year world-renowned scholars, artists, writers, performers and thinkers visit OSU, providing the community with access to a world of ideas and talent typically found only in larger cities. As a member of the Pac-10 Conference, OSU athletics delivers year-round excitement in 17 men’s and women’s sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball.

OSU Technology Transfer

From agriculture to software, OSU researchers are creating innovative technologies to meet needs and solve problems. The university’s Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) helps commercialize inventions and transfer university-developed technologies to private-sector companies. The OTT works to educate faculty and departments on patents and intellectual property, manages OSU’s patent portfolio and assists in identifying, protecting and licensing OSU inventions for the public’s greater use and benefit.

In partnership with the business and development communities, OSU has been instrumental in efforts to commercialize innovative technologies. Oregon’s first signature research site, the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) is co-located on the Hewlett Packard campus and has been the culminating statewide force in gaining hundreds of millions of new research dollars for Oregon. Other partners including the Chamber Coalition’s Economic Development Department, Oregon Entreprenuers Network, SmartUps, Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL), The Business Enterprise Center, Willamette Angel Conference and others collaborate to bring innovative solutions to the global marketplace.
