Vicksburg’s diverse religious congregations mirror the rich culture of the region. In fact, churches in Vicksburg represent more than 30 faiths. Many historic and beautiful churches survived the siege of Vicksburg. Reverend W. W. Lord actually conducted daily services at Christ Church during the battle of Vicksburg despite constant shelling. Holy Trinity, another historic and picturesque place of worship, has a memorial commemorating both Union and Confederate soldiers.
The strong church community in Vicksburg responds to many community needs. Congregations offer help in the form of food pantries, counseling services, clothing donations and shelters, to name a few. Some provide daycare and preschool services for the children in Warren County. Others offer programs for seniors. For certain, these churches have changed the lives of Warren County residents for the better, time and time again.
Other Civic organizations also positively impact the quality of life in Vicksburg. The United Way of West Central Mississippi serves 21 local agencies and touches the lives of thousands of citizens each year. Serving about 3,500 individuals each year, Warren-Yazoo Mental Health is one of 15 regional mental health centers in the state. Their mission is to provide the highest quality and most cost effective mental health care available today. The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and MiddWest are a few of the other active groups reaching out to help those in need. There are so many more wonderful agencies, each doing their part for a happier, healthier community and they are appreciated for their contribution.
