Location & Transportation

The Metuchen area is home to a warm and welcoming community, one that is proud of its heritage and diversity. On our tree-lined streets you will find the ideal combination of friendly people, a vibrant downtown, a great school system, and an easy commute.

The Borough of Metuchen itself is approximately 2.75 square miles in size with around 5,000 households and a population of just under 15,000. However, the borough is completely surrounded by Edison, a 32-square-mile township of more than 100,000 residents, effectively bringing much more economic potential to the area and its downtown core.

Situated in Middlesex County, the heart of central New Jersey, from the center of Metuchen it is only 17 miles to Newark, 25 miles to New York City, 30 miles to Sandy Hook, 40 miles to Trenton, and 70 miles to Philadelphia. The borough is easily accessed by a number of major roadways; the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), the Garden State Parkway, Route 287 (and 440), US Route 1, State Highway 27, and several county roads.

But just as in its early history, it is public transportation that makes Metuchen so strategically located. The Metuchen Train Station is serviced by NJ TRANSIT’s Northeast Corridor line, with direct service to New York City, Newark, Newark Liberty International Airport, New Brunswick, and Trenton. While most homes and businesses are within walking distance to the station platforms, there is a public parking deck and several surface lots to accommodate commuters, day-trippers, and visiting clients. NJ TRANSIT’s bus routes connect Metuchen and Fords, Plainfield, Perth Amboy, Piscataway, and Edison from the transit station, further enhancing connections to points outside the borough limits.

Newark Liberty International Airport is only 15 miles from the center of town, and easily accessible by direct rail connections or Metuchen’s 24-hour taxi and limousine service. This international hub, the fifth-busiest in the country, services 50 carriers, employs more than 22,000 people, and accommodates an average of 1,200 flights per day.
